Hayley Matthews
Physiotherapist
I graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in 2006 and have been working within private practice and the corporate sector for most of my career and enjoy the freedom to go the extra mile for my clients. In 2008 I relocated from Hertfordshire to Cornwall and have continued my work in private practice.
I gained my Pilates qualifications with the APPI in 2007 and have previously taught Pilates – up to 12 classes per week! I have found the Pilates hugely beneficial on a personal level with my other passion, which is horse riding.
In addition to my physiotherapy tools, I am also qualified in the use of acupuncture for pain relief and musculoskeletal disorders, and I am a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. I have had success treating a variety of ailments with acupuncture from Sciatica to headaches, Arthritic knees to children with chronic pain.
I have a special interest in the treatment, management and prevention of sports injuries and for five years I spent my Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as Saturdays working with rugby players; Initially a local amateur team and then in a semi-professional environment at Launceston (it’s not as glamorous as you think!). As well as rugby, I have worked at the London marathon, the Hertfordshire youth games and the Bedford half marathon.
Carmel Marner
Physiotherapist
Since completing my physio degree in Australia in 1992, I have enjoyed working with my skills in Australia, the USA, Nepal and the UK.
My favourite clinical areas have been orthopaedics and musculoskeletal injuries/pain, particularly when these issues are preventing someone from achieving a healthier lifestyle of weight. I am currently part of the Plymouth Weight Management Team, working in partnership with overweight and obese clients, enabling them to overcome their barriers to being more active. Integral to this journey is the development of a greater ability to be self-compassionate.
My most challenging and rewarding role is as mother of two energetic youngsters, who are mad keen on surfing, dancing, mountain biking and making music!
I am a great outdoor enthusiast. One of my most memorable experiences has been trekking to Everest Base Camp. I have dabbled with road marathons, love swimming, canoeing and cycling. My husband frequently takes part in mountain marathons and adventure races. AS backup crew to these events, I often find myself as Physic of any sporting injuries. I recently did the OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) with my husband – a 2 day event – and was thrilled with a placing of 77/176 teams.
I believe that the correct combination of hands-on treatment, exercise prescription and pain relieving modalities such as acupuncture and electrotherapy can really make a difference to either acute or longstanding musculoskeletal issues.
Jacob Herman
Physiotherapist
I graduated from the University of Southampton and began my career in the NHS at Derriford Hospital, gaining valuable experience of working in a major trauma centre and treating patients with respiratory, cardiothoracic, orthopaedic, and musculoskeletal pathologies. I went on to gain a senior position specialising in outpatients rotating into different sectors of trauma, plastics and burns, hydrotherapy, as well as more common injuries.
Early in 2016 I moved to the Nuffield Health hospital in Plymouth to treat both inpatients and outpatients, pre- and post-operatively, as well as athletes and regular musculoskeletal conditions. Further to this in the November I joined Saltash Physiotherapy where I am able to provide evening appointments for clients.
I have a special interest in manual therapy, and have been trained in Maitland and Mulligan manual concepts, as well manipulative therapy.
Furthermore, I have undertaken numerous post-graduate training courses, including running analysis, taping and strapping, and sports massage. As a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists I use acupuncture for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, as an adjunct to treatment.
Outside of my hospital work, having trained in sports trauma management, I was team physiotherapist for one of Plymouth’s local rugby clubs, providing match day pitch side trauma management, as well as assessment and treatment at the club.
Paul Atkinson
Physiotherapist
Paul has spent the past 10 years working for Plymouth Argyle FC and prior to that working for Heart of Midlothian FC and Dunfermline FC – 18 years in professional sport! His career initially started out in the Royal Navy medical Branch qualifying through the military as a Physio in 1993.
During his career he has worked with the English Football Association U16 and U17 age group squads, Devon County RFU, is a guest lecturer at Marjon University and is a English Football Association Medical Tutor…. a fantastic asset to our team!
Paul brings a huge wealth of experience to our clinic whether you are a serious athlete or a weekend runner, wether its back pain or arthritis.
Kelly Oswin
Physiotherapist
I graduated from the University of Plymouth as a Physiotherapist gaining valuable experience working in ITU Cardio-thoracic, Women’s health, Neurological rehab and Musculoskeletal physiotherapy. I loved my time on MSK and Women’s health so would like to focus more on these areas during my career.
I have undertaken numerous training courses, including Clinical Pilates and Sports Massage, which I find a great addition to my ‘toolbox’. I really enjoy working with people to achieve their individual goals, no matter how big or small, using a variety of treatments tailored to them.
Outside of my Physiotherapy work, I enjoy spending time with my two children pursuing their hobbies and my 2 horses where I use my natural horsemanship skills to communicate and build a trusting relationship.
